PARKKIM won the invited competition for Gwanggyo New City Park Design Concept and Jungyoon Kim served as the Park Design Commissioner, overseeing the entire park-making process.
Gwanggyo is completed in 2013, sited within the existing Suwon City, carved out of a mountainous area. This resulted in a very high green cover rate (41%). On the other hand, this auspicious fact provided not so convenient circumstances in which the 13 urban parks can be created.
PARKKIM’s proposal titled “8%: climbing a mountain on high heels” suggested building at least one pedestrian path in all the parks, with a maximum 8% inclination, enabling all the citizens to visit the mountainous parks in their daily lives. PARKKIM defined the notion of an urban park as a place where a citizen with any physical disability (including wearing high heels) and in any age group can enjoy without special climbing gear. PARKKIM delivered Design Development set, evolved from the winning scheme and now the parks became a huge asset of the new city.
