Glittering Sadness

미국 아틀란틱시티 홀로코스트 국제현상설계

2010

Project Location: Atlantic City, NJ USA

We believe ‘a beautiful memorial’ is possible. It should make attractive scenery together with the dazzling context of the site, while emitting the feeling of condolence as a memorial for such a horrible history. It is composed with fifteen boxes of gold-colored steel mesh, inspired by the wire fences of concentration camps, and the size of them decreases in order to make denser and darker space near the center. The footings and floor of the existing pavilion remains as the foundation of new intervention. There is one entrance from the boardwalk side, and two separate paths in the structure, leading people toward a central void. Standing in the void, a section of the roof directly above is cut out toward the sky. Through the sequential experience, we want people to get not only the feeling of condolence but also of hope and catharsis within this Glittering Sadness.
