This essay was the result of PARKKIM’s participation in the workshop “Asian Alterity,” organized by William Lim in 2007, in Singapore. It was published in the book with the same title. The term ‘alternative nature’ was first coined in this essay.
In the essay, five alternative natures were recognized: revealed nature, spot nature, the memory of nature, interiorized nature, and distancing nature. Those are signified as non-naturalistic artifacts from which citizens have been earning the experience of nature in the Gangnam (meaning ‘South of Han River’, in Seoul) area despite the scarcity of parks.
